Report from three men in a boat
Sunday dawned sunny but almost windless. With a shortened course there was plenty of opportunity for placings to change throughout the races – or for boats on one corner of the Reservoir to be near-becalmed whilst others raced along. But as the morning progressed the wind gently filled in.
We squeezed three races in. Races 1 and 2 were two laps, the third race just once around the course. The Topaz and Toppers were given a one-minute handicap advantage per lap.
The fleet was small, but sailing was competitive: there was a different winner in every race and the positions do not tell the whole story as there was often only a short space between a number of boats. In the third race there were bearly more than 30 seconds between second and fifth place 3!
The light winds definitely favoured the Lazers which accelerated faster when the odd puff of wind came along, but it was the juniors, Becki and Sarah, who pulled off a stunning win in the Topper for the final race of the morning. Special mention to Alice who took line honours in her second race on the Reservoir and pressed hard in both the other races – the fickle winds were no barrier for her!
But most importantly, everyone enjoyed the sailing. Well done all!
